The surface modification of medical devices allows manufacturers to combine the favorable mechanical or bulk properties of a material with specific functionalities at biological interfaces to optimize product performance, safety and biocompatibility. For applications in vascular access, interventional therapy, drainage or urology, surfaces are often modified to impart anti-thrombogenic, antimicrobial, anti-fouling or lubricious properties.

Lubricious surfaces specifically have been traditionally achieved via the application of hydrophilic or hydrophobic coatings that can provide varying degrees of surface slipperiness or friction.
